Beyond R-Value

R-value is only half the performance story

A wall assembly can hit its R-value target on paper and still leak conditioned air through hundreds of small gaps — around electrical boxes, top plates, plumbing penetrations, and the rim joist. In a heating-dominated climate, that leakage is exactly what drives high winter energy bills and cold, drafty rooms, even in a home that's technically "insulated."

Spray foam's value on a new build is that it air-seals and insulates as one application. Where fiberglass batts leave gaps by design at every penetration and cavity edge, sprayed foam expands to fill the cavity and adheres directly to framing, closing off the air pathways that a tightly-built home needs sealed before drywall goes up.

Open-cell and closed-cell both have a place on a new build

Closed-cell foam's higher R-value per inch and vapor-barrier properties make it a strong choice for tight wall cavities and rim joists at higher elevation, while open-cell foam is often the right call for interior sound-dampening walls and larger attic volumes where every dollar of foam needs to go further. We scope the right system per assembly rather than defaulting to one product for the whole house.

A lot of the new-construction work we do isn't a full spec home — it's a bedroom addition, a garage conversion, or a remodel that opens up wall and ceiling cavities down to the framing. Those projects deserve the same elevation-scaled insulation standard as a ground-up build, and they carry the same one-time opportunity: once the new drywall goes up, that assembly won't be easily accessible again.
